UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS AT THE BREEDERS’ CUP

10 November 2023

Last week we had the honour of attending the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita Park in LA. It was a fantastic spectacle from the start and was well orchestrated by Breeders’ Cup President Drew Fleming and the team.

With so many success stories of our clients over the weekend we want to take you through some of our highlights.

Tom Marquand displayed his incredible skills by partnering with the renowned all-weather trainer Michael Appleby and the formidable Big Evs. The partnership between horse and jockey was undeniable as Tom Marquand, with remarkable skill and determination, steered Big Evs to a victory that will forever be etched in his career. It was not just a race; it was a defining moment as Tom Marquand claimed his maiden Breeders’ Cup title in his first-ever ride at the prestigious event.

Irad Ortiz emerged as the undisputed star of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup, delivering a performance that will be talked about for years to come. The pinnacle of his achievements came with the Breeders’ Cup Classic, where Ortiz guided White Abarrio to a victory. This was not the extent of his glory, Ortiz’s masterful touch extended to the Filly and Mare Sprint, where Goodnight Olive triumphed, and the Sprint, where Elite Power showcased his speed and stamina. What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that it marks the second consecutive time Ortiz has steered these horses to claim the title of Breeders’ Cup Champions. The consistency and skill displayed are a testament to the unique bond between jockey and horse.

As the curtains closed on the Breeders’ Cup meeting, a new chapter began for Goodnight Olive. The Filly and Mare Sprint champion took centre stage at the Fasig-Tipton sales, commanding an astonishing $6 million. This price tag not only reflects the undeniable racing prowess of Goodnight Olive but also underscores the market’s recognition of the stellar partnership between Irad Ortiz and the equine athletes he guides to victory.

Champion Jockey William Buick left an undeniable mark with his triumphant ride aboard Master of the Sea in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Buick showcased a masterclass in riding that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. The final bend proved to be the stage for Buick’s strategic prowess as he guided Master of the Sea with finesse and determination. The exhilarating finish saw Buick’s mount edging ahead, crossing the line over the other formidable contender, Mawj, also wearing the Godolphin colours.

Ryan Moore delivered a ride that left spectators in awe. Aboard the talented Auguste Rodin, Moore orchestrated a performance that earned him the accolade for the ride of the weekend. Auguste Rodin trailed behind Shahryar along the rail, it was at the top of the lane that Moore executed a flawless move, slipping inside Balladeer to surge to the front. This strategic manoeuvre allowed Auguste Rodin to gain a crucial advantage over Up to the Mark, maintaining the lead to the wire. Not only did this victory showcase the exceptional synergy between jockey and horse, but it also marked the seventh Breeders’ Cup Turf win for the accomplished trainer Aidan O’Brien. Post his Breeders’ Cup triumph it has been announced that Auguste Rodin will stay in training for another year.
